2011 Hershey Track & Field Competition Schedule (as of 6/3/11)

You don’t need to be a star athlete to participate in track & field….you just need to have fun.

The Hershey’s Track and Field Games started over 30 years ago and continue to grow and grow.  It is the largest youth sport program in the world with over 400,000 participants each year.  The program is for all children ages 9 thru 14 who love to run, jump and throw.  A select few will even have the opportunity to compete at the North American Final in Hershey Pennsylvania.

Maine's 2011 local, district and state meet schedule is posted below. If you are interested in more information, please contact State Chair Tim Baude at tim.baude@bangormaine.gov or 992-4493.

Maine delegation to 2010 Hershey Track & Field North American Finals returns with medals and memories

August 5-8, Kathy Mazzuchelli of Caribou Parks and Recreation and Tim Baude with Bangor Parks and Recreation led a group of six Maine youth athletes to the North American Finals of Hershey Track and Field in Hershey, PA.   In addition to coming away with several top finishes, the trip featured encounters with Olympic greats Carl Lewis and Rafer Johnson; a tour of the Hershey Chocolate Factory; roller coaster rides and loads of fun.  The group shares their experience with this slide show below...

Tia Jackson from Old Town and Molly Anthony from Bridgewater along with Kolleen Bouchard from Houlton and Seraphina Provenzano from Holden begin the third leg of their trip to the No. American Finals of the Hershey Track and Field program.  First the County Kids traveled by car to Bangor Wednesday afternoon, then flew to Philadelphia Thursday morning….here they are on their final leg…….a coach ride to Elizabethtown (Brandon Theriault from Fort Kent is in lower left)

The whole group met up with Dr. Cohen, the founder of the Hershey Youth Track and Field Program.  Dr Cohen will be stepping down from the Board of Directors of the Hershey program but his legacy will be carried on.

Seraphina found her way to the autograph table and Carl Lewis while Tim (in the background) shares some stories with other chaperones and parents.

James Petersen reconnected with Rafer Johnson, Olympic gold medalist and spokeperson for the Hershey program.  Rafer was impressed with James at last year’s final and included him in his comments at the closing ceremonies.

Tia,  Brandon and Molly take time to get some autographs from Olympic great Carl Lewis

Then on Friday morning it was time for all 500 kids and chaperones  to load on the 16 school busses and head to the Hershey Chocolate Factory!!  Here the kids don hats donated by Tim Baude that note that Region 6 Runs on Diesel to honor our Regional Coordinator Brent Diesel of New Hampshire

Of course when you enter the Chocolate Factory you can’t have jewelry, open toe shoes and you have to cover your hair…….here is the Maine delegation stylin!!!

Of course covering hair means facial hair too…..although as you will see later……..Tim’s facial hair undergoes a transformation !!!

Once we leave Chocolate World it’s on to Hershey Park !!  Here Brandon, Tia and Molly are about to get launched on StormRunner where you go from zero to 60 in three seconds !!!  Then you loop and twist and drop and have 32 seconds of sheer terror……….

The daredevils conceded to go on some calmer rides with the rest of the group………..excluding Tim of course !

Around 6 p.m. it was on to Chocolate World for some souvenir shopping and a 3-d movie (note Tim still has his goatee).
Then the opening ceremonies began…………..all the athletes march around the track and open the games with a torch ceremony similar to the Olympics.

Tia Jackson of Old Town, our oldest member and in her last year of the program was chosen to carry the Maine flag in the opening ceremonies.

Seraphina Provenzano’s family showed off their cheerleading uniforms!!!

When it was over the Maine athletes had all finished in the top 8 of their respective events with James Petersen capturing Maine’s first gold medal in recent history….maybe ever!!!  Tia placed 4th in the 13-14 100; Molly and Brandon placed 7th in the 100 for 11-12s ; Kolleen placed 5th in the 9-10 softball throw and James placed 1st in the 9-10 400.  Here they share the joy with Carl Lewis

Rafer confers with James again after the meet and once again is inspired by James who reflects the spirit of the games by noting his personal best rather than his winning……..Rafer once again used James in his closing remarks at the closing ceremonies
Tim told the kids that if someone captured a first place finish he would shave off his goatee and mustache.  If someone set a meet record he would shave his head…………well James Petersen captured first place and Tim was true to his word although it was tough shaving all that facial hair with a little bic razor !!!!

Team members pose at Founders Hall at the Milton Hershey School prior to the Friendship Banquet

On behalf of the Maine Recreation and Park Association we wish to congratulate this year’s representatives that traveled to the North American Finals.  Tim and Kathy thoroughly enjoyed the trip and felt that this was one of the best teams to represent Maine in recent history !!  We wish you the best of luck in the future and hope that Hershey truly has allowed you to unwrap your potential !!!

Hope to see you next year!

Tim Baude, State Chair

Kathy Mazzuchelli, No Region Coordinator
